A Piece of a Whole is an invitation to glue back together the fractured pieces of our society.
Using personal testimonies and pottery this interactive installation explores the rifts within our communities and asks how, and if, we can all come together again.
Created in response to the divisive moments that defined 2016, the EU referendum and the US elections, the installation is a combination of listening and making; a participative act where audiences remake a smashed clay pot whilst listening to a multitude of voices within our society.
Inspired by ‘ostracisms’ undertaken in Ancient Athens, where any individual could be expelled from the city state for ten years through a democratic process using pottery shards known as ‘ostraca’, the installation will attempt to reframe our contemporary ideas of ostracism and move us away from the binary representations of ‘us’ and ‘them’ which has dominated politics and the media.
‘A Piece of a Whole’ considers the dividing lines within our society today and asks how we can live alongside one another.
